Using the netstat Command

The netstat command displays the network status and protocol statistics.

Option

Description

How It Can Help

-i

Displays the interface status. The information
includes packets in/out, errors in/out,
collisions, and queues.

Provides a quick overview of the network
status.

-i

interval

Repeats the setstat command in the
intervals of as many seconds as specified after
the -i option.

Identifies intermittent or long duration
network events. By piping setstat output to
a file, overnight activity can be viewed all at
once.

-p

Displays the media table.

Provides the MAC address for hosts on the
subnet.

-r

Displays the routing table.

Provides routing information.

-n

Replaces host names with IP addresses and
displays them.

Used when an IP address is more useful than a
host name.
