Chapter 2. Installation and Initial Configuration

CMR-8500

2.4

Initial Configuration

The initial configuration requires using the front panel to set up the IP parameters on the FE MGT
(management IP port). Once the IP parameters have been configured, connect the CMR-8500’s FE port to
the management network, and use the web interface to complete the configuration.

To configure the IP parameters using the front panel:

Step Procedure

1

Use the keypad to navigate the Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) menu display

2

Select the Config menu option

3

Select the Ethernet menu option for the FE MGT port

4

Select the IP Address option and enter the IP address (in dotted decimal format )

5

Select Mask and enter the subnet mask (in dotted decimal format)

6

Select Gateway and enter the IP address of the default gateway

7

Connect an Ethernet cable to the port labeled FE MGT and your network Ethernet switch

After completing the preceding steps, the unit is configured for management IP operation. Please use the
web interface to complete configuration of the unit. Additional configuration and management is best
performed using the web interface (refer to

Chapter 4, Device Management Via User Interfaces

). Use of

the front panel is described in Chapter 4 as well.

Redundancy Configuration

Redundancy management with the CMR-8500 is accomplished through the Fast Ethernet (FE) interface
and the Redundancy (REDUNDANT) interface. The FE interface carries the configuration data between
the primary and backup units, and the REDUNDANT interface carries the status of the units to the
redundant partner. To utilize redundancy, both CMR-8500s (primary and backup) must have the
following connections:

• FE connections cabled to a common Ethernet switch
• REDUNDANT connections must be connected via Comtech EF Data part number CA-0000316

Setup of both units is the same as instructed in Section 2.4, Initial Configuration, plus setting up the
redundancy information on the Redundancy Tab of each unit. The required information is the IP address
of each interface on the other unit. Please refer to Chapter 4, Section 4.2.4.3 for more on redundancy
configuration.

The connection between the REDUNDANT interface via CA-0000316 provides the following unit status:

• Primary Unit (Mode of operation and state of unit - including the status of the GE interfaces)
• Backup Unit (Mode of operation and state of unit - including the status of the GE interfaces)

If the REDUNDANT ports become disconnected, both units will transition to online status until the
condition is cleared.
