Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) A process in which acoustical echo is
removed from a signal. AEC can be used to remove unwanted signals from mic audio
if the unwanted acoustic signal is available separately as an electronic signal.

Adaptive Ambient Mode An automixing function that dynamically changes the

ambient noise reference level based on a moving average of the actual noise floor of

the room as picked up by the microphones.

Ambient Level The sound pressure level (SPL) of a room when no one is speaking

and no external audio is present. Also known as noise floor.

Ambient Noise The existing room-level noise, such as that caused by ventilation

systems, paper shuffling, and background chatter.

Attenuation A reduction of signal amplitude.

Automatic Gain Control (AGC) Automatically increases or decreases audio gain

to maintain a consistent audio level.

Automatic Microphone Mixer A microphone mixer that automatically activates

and deactivates microphone channels. This serves to increase intelligibility of the

audio by reducing reverberation and noise picked up by the microphones.

Baud Rate The number of signal transitions per second, or the clock rate of the

serial bit stream in hertz. Given 7 or 8 bits for data plus start and stop, the

approximate ASCII character transmission rate is one-tenth the baud rate.

Chairman Override Provides gating priority for all microphones selected for the

chairman override group. When a mic in this group gates on, all microphones not

included in this group gate off.

Clipping A condition in which a signal level exceeds the maximum level a circuit

can handle. This is usually caused by overdriving an input. It always causes

distortion and typically leads to listener fatigue and accelerated failure of

loudspeaker drivers.

Decay Rate The rate at which an automatic mixer attenuates a microphone

channel’s audio level.

Digital Hybrid A telephone hybrid that uses digital signal processing to provide

excellent audio separation between the send and receive audio paths.

Digital Signal Processor (DSP) A high speed digital numeric processor that can

rapidly calculate complex mathematical equations. The DSP is the most important

component used in ClearOne digital products.
