The contactor assembly also distributes the VCM’s
signals to and from the controllers:

• The VCM actually communicates with the control-

lers by a series of positive and negative 5 volt
pulses that travel through pins 11 and 12 of the
contactor’s main harness connection. These sig-
nals are carried to the controllers through the yel-
low and gray wires in the communication harness.

NOTE: All four controller have the same programing.

There are ground jumpers in the communication
harness connector at each controller. These jump-
ers tell the controller what motor they are con-
trolling. See Figure 5.57.

NOTE: The controllers are connected in a daisy chain net-

work. If a controller looses a network connection,
the VCM will display a communication fault for the
controller it was communicating with when the fault
occurred, NOT the controller connection that has a
fault. So if the VCM displays an interlock 1 code 32
fault for the right hub, there is a 25% chance that
the fault is actually at the right hub controller. In
Figure 5.58,
the right hub showed a fault, but the
communication harness was unplugged from the
left deck motor.

When there are fault codes for a controller and all har-
ness connections and the contactor assembly have been
ruled out, the next step is to determine if the fault is in the
controller or the motor. To do this:

1. Disconnect the motor harness connectors from the

controller.

2.

Plug the motor into the opposite controller.

3.

Connect the motor of the opposite controller into the
original controller. Figure 5.59

4.

Test run the mower.

• If the fault stays at that controller, it is a bad con-

troller.

• If the fault follows the motor, the motor is faulty.
