Troubleshooting

Unlike all other mowers produced by MTD, the RZT-S Zero has an insulated 48 volt system. This means that the

usual methods of troubleshooting will not apply to this mower. On this mower the system can be boiled down to this:

Switches and sensors send input signals to the VCM.

The VCM interprets the data.

The VCM sends instructions to the control panel.

The control panel carries out the instructions.

The system is a closed loop system that is isolated from the frame. Also the VCM connectors are sealed and

cannot be back probed. Normally this would make the system very hard to troubleshoot, however the software in the
VCM is very helpful and can assist the technician in diagnosing most problems. The VCM monitors the system and
will notify the operator if there is a problem with the system.

NOTE: The VCM will flash warnings such as:

Blades off: Overload/Allow motors to cool, raise deck

Blades Off: In Reverse/Restart blades

Unplug charger

Just because a warning message appears on the screen does not mean VCM has recorded a fault code
or needs to be brought in for service. The warnings are usually operator errors. They are designed to get
the operator to correct the operating conditions before damage occurs.

Most troubleshooting procedures start at the VCM. When there is a problem, the VCM will flash a mes-
sage to the operator to seek service. The technician can use the VCM’s service screens along with the
service codes chart at the end of this chapter to hone in on the input or output that is causing the fault.

NOTE: There is a harness break out adapter kit, part number # 759-05035 that can be used to check the

inputs and outputs of the VCM. The use of this kit is covered, as needed, in the troubleshooting proce-
dures.

NOTE: The harness breakout adapters seen in the pictures of this manual and will differ in appearance from

production adapters.
