Managing tasks
This module describes how to manage tasks.
About tasks
Tasks are system operations that you register that perform a specific function such as allocating volumes
or grouping storage resources.
Typically, you schedule the tasks to run at a time that is best suited for your storage system. Tasks
might encounter problems that cause them to fail due to a communication error or failure can be
caused by the exclusive control locking done by the target storage system.
Restarted tasks inherit the same configured values that were initially set when registered. The resource
configuration may have changed between the time when the task was initially registered and when
it is restarted. When restarting a task, check the configuration to verify whether you can restart it.
NOTE:
There are two cases where you cannot restart a task: once a task has been moved to the History tab
(and data collection tasks cannot be moved to the History tab), and if the task is deleted. In this second
case, if a task has been restarted several times, and the last instance of the task is restarted and
deleted, the task cannot be restarted again.
•
Tasks can be performed immediately or at a specified date and time. This allows you to schedule
storage tasks appropriately.
•
You can check the progress or the results of all previously submitted tasks on the Tasks & Alerts
tab.
•
The schedule of a task that is waiting can be changed.
•
Specifying an email address when registering migration tasks enables email notification for migra-
tion task completion (tasks whose status is success, failure, or stopped).
TIP:
An email notification makes it unnecessary to monitor the progress of a task. This setting is used
in cases where you want to verify the execution results for a task, or when it is necessary to contact
a server administrator or application administrator regarding changes to storage system settings,
or when you plan to execute a task that will take a long time to finish.
