Operations
Web Server and Java Client
Remote Web Console is the interface for various Java applications that enable you to manage the
storage system. Applications run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and are launched by Java Web Start
through the web browsers on a Java client. The Java clients that run Remote Web Console applications
are also called Remote Web Console computers.
The storage system service processor (SVP) is the computer inside the storage system. The SVP uses JVM
to function as a web server and that is used for maintenance. Each time you log in to the Remote
Web Console computer and connect to the SVP, a Java application is downloaded from the SVP to
the Remote Web Console computer.
This document describes and provides instructions for using the licensed Remote Web Console. The
Remote Web Console communicates directly with the storage system via a local-area network (LAN) to
obtain storage system configuration and status information, and to send user-requested commands to
the storage system. The Remote Web Console displays the detailed storage system information, and
allows you to configure and perform operations on the storage system.
The storage system can be connected to two LANs. The storage system internal LAN is a private LAN that
is used to connect the SVPs of multiple storage systems. Your intranet is a public LAN that allows you to
access one or more SVPs from individual Remote Web Console computers. This configuration allows
you to easily access and control the registered storage system. In a SAN environment, where several
storage systems may be connected together, you must designate a primary SVP, which can be either an
SVP connected to a storage system, or a web server with the exact same configuration as an SVP (see
“ Starting Up and Logging Into Remote Web Console ” on page 33).
