Configuring IP Filters
When you define an IP filter rule and enable the feature, you instruct the ROUTER to
examine each data packetit receives to determine whether it meets criteria set forth in the
rule. The criteria can include the size of the packet, the network or internet protocol it is
carrying, the direction in which it is traveling (for example, from the LAN to the Internet or
vice versa), the IP address of the sending computer, the destination IP address, and other
characteristics of the packet data.
If the packet matches the criteria established in a rule, the packet can either be accepted
(forwarded towards its destination), or denied (discarded), depending on the action
specified in the rule.
Viewing Your IP Filter Configuration
To view your current IP filter configuration, log into Configuration Manager, click the
Services tab, and then click
IP Filter
in the task bar. The IP Filter page displays, as shown in
Figure 59.

The IP Filter Configuration page displays global settings that you can modify, and the IP
filter rule table, which shows all currently established rules. See “Creating IP Filter Rules” on
page 131 for a description of the items that make up a rule. When rules are defined, you
can use the icons that display in the Actions column to edit (
), delete ( ), and view
details on (
) the corresponding rule.
