Scratch Rule: This option determines how a tape will be handled when it is selected to
be scratched. The default value for this option is ‘Never’. This is the normal setting when
a tape manager is used and a tape appears in the scratch report generated by that tape
manager. If no tape manager is used, you may use a retention period to determine how
long to keep a tape, or you can manually scratch tapes at a time of your own choosing. To
manually scratch the tapes in this pool, set the Scratch Rule to ‘Never’. Other options
include:
Erase – Tape is erased using an algorithm to hinder making the file recoverable
later, then deleted.
Save in Scratch Rack – The tape is moved to a scratch rack where it will stay
undeleted until the tape (volser name) is reused. (Tape rack given the name
‘Scratch’.)
Retention Interval (in days): When no tape manager is used and the Scratch Rule is not
set to ‘Never’, the Retention Interval setting will determine how long tapes in this pool
are to be kept before being scratched. The retention interval is measured in days (default
value for this option is 30 days). Tapes are scratched at midnight of the last day in the
retention interval. If the retention interval is set to ‘None’, then the tapes will need to be
manually scratched.
When a tape manager is used, the Retention Interval should be set to ‘None’ to scratch
the tape at midnight following the receipt of the scratch report. If a value other than
‘None’ is defined, then the tape will be retained for the additional interval defined by this
option before it is actually scratched.
Tape Manager: You may select a predefined Tape Manager from the list if one is used
in your environment. If no Tape Manager is used. Select ‘None’ from the list (default
value). If your Tape Manager is not in the list, you will need to contact Visara support
personnel and be prepared to provide the name of your tape manager and a sample
scratch report generated by your tape manager. Even if your tape manager is in the list, it
is recommended that you provide Visara support personnel with a sample scratch report
(as the scratch report format may change from one release to another of the tape
manager).
Scratch Report VOLSER: This is the name of the scratch report that will be written
into the pool when a tape manager is in use. When the VI-5990 receives a scratch report,
all files found in the scratch report will be marked to be scratched. Based on the Scratch
Rule configured for this pool, the scratched tapes will be processed at midnight.
