Terms used in the following discussions:
Booted Configuration: This is the configuration that was booted by the server. It
determines how the VI-5990 will communicate with the host and store tapes (files). It is
also the configuration that the status panels should reflect. This configuration for the most
part, will not change until the platform is rebooted or restarted.
Current Configuration: This is the configuration that the configuration panels reflect
when viewed. Changes made through the configuration process and saved with the
[Update] buttons are saved to the Current Configuration. When booted, restarted, or
powered down, the Current Configuration that is active when the server software closes
becomes the configuration that will become the Booted Configuration when the server
comes back up. When a reboot/restart occurs, the initial Current Configuration is the
same as the Booted Configuration. Use the [Activate] button next to another
configuration to make that configuration the Current Configuration.
Default Configuration: The default configuration is a basic configuration with no tape
drives configured, no CUs defined, no options configured. The default configuration is
determined strictly by the hardware and licenses installed on the platform. When a
platform boots for the first time it boots on the default configuration. You can create a
new configuration based on the Default Configuration by entering a name into the field
next to the [New] button, then pressing the [New] button.
When saving a configuration, a name is assigned and the date and time are recorded. This
information is displayed on this panel along with buttons that can be used to activate
inactive configurations, or delete them. The configuration that is currently active is
identified on this panel also. (Note that the currently active configuration is not
necessarily the one that the platform booted on, and is currently functional. You may look
on the System Information panel to determine which configuration is the currently booted
configuration.) Changes made to the current configuration are saved as part of the current
configuration automatically. You do not need to save the current configuration with this
utility unless you desire to save a snapshot of what the current configuration is (for
possible use later). If you need to work with multiple configurations, then you will want
to save a copy of each of those configurations.
A newly reactivated configuration will not take affect until the VI-5990 is either restarted
or rebooted, depending on the option changes.
Among the options that may require a reboot are:
FICON Options have changed
Ethernet MAC address has changed
Options that should take affect immediately include:
Administrative passwords
