The Configure Pools panel should appear similar to the one below:
Field Definitions
Below you will find a description of the fields found on this panel.
Pool Name: This is a one to five alpha character field that is used to determine a default
naming scheme for all VOLSERs that will be stored in this pool. The number of letters
defined will determine the maximum number of tapes that can be defined using the
default naming scheme for the pool. VOLSERs are limited to eight characters (pool name
+ numerical identification). Therefore, a one character pool name yields a possible
10,000,000 tapes, while a three character pool name would limit the number of tapes in
the pool to 100,000. A five character pool name limits you to 1000 tapes. Pressing the
[New] button changes the Pool Name control from a drop down menu control to a data
entry control, and allows you to enter a new Pool Name. Once you have selected the
[Update] button, the control changes back to a drop down menu with the new entry
included in the list.
Pool Directory: Each tape pool is kept in its own directory (or folder). Each tape is kept
as a file within the directory. This location may be defined to be located wherever in the
directory structure you need it to be located, or you may use the default location offered
by the VI-5990. Note, that by locating the directory in a location of your choosing, you
may use external controls for handling the tape files (you may use external software to
replicate, encrypt or otherwise manipulate the tapes).
