When none of the indicators are on, the printer is in
Normal Mode. This mode is current when you first turn
the printer on. See "About Data Entry Modes" for more
information.
4-line/33 Key Printer. Indicators appear along the left side of the
display to show the mode the printer is in. The indicators are
vertical lines, except for the lowest level, which is a q or a r, and
the highest, which is a t, or p.

Numbering the positions 1-4 (from top to bottom), following is the
meaning of each indicator.
Position Description
1-p Function Key Mode
t Delete Mode
2 Control Mode
3 Alt Mode
4-q Upper-case Alpha Mode
r Lower-case Alpha Mode
In the case of positions 1 and 4, you press the key twice to get the
second indicator.
