Calibration
Blood Pressure Calibration Check
The Welch Allyn Vital Signs Monitor is manufactured to the highest industry standards for quality
and accuracy. The device is manufactured using calibrated pressure standards traceable to NIST
(National Institute of Standards and Technology). Welch Allyn recommends that blood pressure cal-
ibration for the Vital Signs Monitor is checked on an annual basis using the following procedure.
1. Put the Vital Signs Monitor into its blood pressure calibration check mode. In this mode, the
device will continuously display the measured pressure and the pressure release valve is closed.
1.1
Initiate the Vital Signs Monitor’s internal configuration settings menu by pressing the
Power button while continuously depressing the START button. Continue to depress
the START button until the unit software version information is displayed.
1.2
Press the REVIEW button repeatedly until “CAL” is shown in the systolic display. The
current pressure will be shown in the diastolic and pulse rate displays.
1.3
Press the START button to close the Monitor’s internal valve so that an external pres-
sure may be applied.
2. Connect the Vital Signs Monitor as
shown.
Make sure the pressure
meter used to test the Vital Signs
Monitor is calibrated and that the
calibration certificate for the pres-
sure meter is traceable to the
National Institute of Standards and
Technology. The pressure meter
testing the Vital Signs Monitor
must have an accuracy of better
than ±3 mmHg. Use a fixed volume
or a cuff wrapped around a cylinder for
the stabilization volume.
3. Pressurize the Vital Signs Monitor to
slightly above 250 mmHg and bleed
down the pressure no faster than 10
mmHg per second, stopping to check
the pressure at 250, 150, and 50
mmHg. Record the readings of the
device and the pressure measurement
standard at each pressure.
4. Calculate the difference between the
readings from the Vital Signs Monitor
and the pressure measurement stan-
dard at each of the specified pressures. Subtract the rated accuracy of the pressure measure-
ment standard from the
±3 mmHg rated accuracy of the Vital Signs Monitor. This is the
pass/
fail criteria to determine if the device is within calibration or not. If the differences between the
Vital Signs Monitor and the pressure measurement standard are within the pass/fail criteria at all
specified pressures, then the device is within calibration.
