Maintenance and Repair

Pay attention to section “Cleaning and Inspection Guidelines,”
beginning on page 6-6 to ensure a thorough installation.

Make sure the needle bearing is in place before sliding the tail
shaft assembly into position.
❑
Rotate the sliding gear shaft and manually shift the gearshift
shaft to check for proper operation - spins and slides freely.
❑
Refer to previous sections to rebuild the top portion (upper
housing assembly) of the gearbox.
Shift Cap and Switch
See Figure 6-17: “Lower Housing Assembly” on page 6-37.
Removal
1. Disconnect the electrical connector to the shift switch.
2. Remove the 1/8” NPT air vent, if equipped. See Figure 6-19:
“Shift Cylinder Assembly” on page 6-40.
3. Unscrew the nylon setscrew, then remove detent spring and
ball.
4. Remove shift switch and seal ring.
5. Remove two screws (not shown) securing the gearshift cap to
the gearbox housing.
6. Remove all gasket material from the mating surface of the
gearbox.
Installation Notes
See Figure 6-17: “Lower Housing Assembly” on page 6-37.
To install, follow the preceding steps in the reverse order, paying
attention to the following:

beginning on page 6-5 to ensure a thorough installation.

Install new switch seal ring on the gearshift switch.
❑
Reconnect the electrical control.
