Table 12 V-VOL Requirements
Item
Requirement
Volume type
V-VOL. The LDEV number is the same as for normal volumes.
Emulation type
OPEN-V
Servers (including RAID Manager) will show you the emulation type of the V-VOLs
with 0, such as OPEN-0V.
Maximum number
4096 volumes per pool
1024 volumes per volume group
63232 volume groups per system
Volume capacity
46 MB to 2 TB per volume
1.1 PB per storage system maximum
Threshold
V-VOL threshold: Default value is 5% of unused pool capacity. You can set it
between 5% and 300%, in 5% increments. The default value is recommended.
The V-VOL threshold is the proportion of the unused V-VOL capacity and the
unused pool capacity.
Path definition
Available. However, you cannot define paths unless you set the pool association
information to the V-VOL.
LDEV format
Available.
When you perform an LDEV format for the V-VOLs, storage system initializes
data only in the allocated pages of the V-VOLs. However, after you perform an
LDEV format, the free space in the pool does not increase because the pages
are not released.
XP Thin Provisioning Requirements
To use XP Thin Provisioning, all storage system hardware, microcode, and software required for XP Thin
Provisioning operations must be installed and enabled. You also need to purchase the license key for XP
Thin Provisioning and install it in Remote Web Console. For detailed information about the license key
and software installation, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Remote Web Console User’s Guide.
Note that you must operate Remote Web Console in modify mode to perform XP Thin Provisioning
operations. Users in view mode can only view XP Thin Provisioning information, but they cannot create
new pools or V-VOLs. For information about how to set up and use the Remote Web Console computer,
see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Remote Web Console User’s Guide.
License Requirements
To operate XP Thin Provisioning, you need to install the XP Thin Provisioning program product in Remote
Web Console. Therefore, purchase of a license for XP Thin Provisioning is required.
You will need an XP Thin Provisioning license for the total pool capacity. When you set XP Thin
Provisioning pools to SLPRs, you are not charged by the SLPRs.
If you use V-VOLs of XP Thin Provisioning as P-VOLs or S-VOLs for Business Copy, you will need a
Business Copy license for the total used pool capacity. If the used volume capacity exceeds the licensed
capacity, the additional capacity will be treated as a temporary license. You will be able to use the
additional capacity for 30 days. Once 30 days has passed, you will not be able to perform Business
Copy operations, except for suspending copy operations or deleting pairs.
For information about licenses, see HP StorageWorks XP24000 Remote Web Console User’s Guide.
