5 Managing Business Copy pairs
This chapter provides instructions for completing BC pair user tasks using the RWC.
Workflow for managing Business Copy pairs
During most pair user tasks, the P-VOL remains available to the host for I/O operations. You must
have Storage Administrator (Local Copy) role to complete BC pair user tasks.
Use the following workflow to complete pair user tasks:
1.
Check the pair status (see
“BC pair status checks” (page 34)
).
For more information about the required status for pair user tasks, see
.
2.
Create the BC pairs (see
).
3.
(Optional) Suspend the BC pair creation.
For more information about suspending BC pair creating, see
4.
(Optional) Suppress update copy operations during pair restoration (see
copy operations during pair restoration” (page 57)
).
5.
Split the pairs. You can do the following:
•
Split BC pairs (see
“Splitting BC pairs” (page 48)
).
•
Split BC pairs in a CG (see
“Workflow for consistency group pair-split” (page 49)
).
6.
Resynchronize or restore the BC pairs (see
“Resynchronizing or restoring BC pairs” (page 55)
).
7.
(Optional) If you have performed a Quick Resync on the pair (“PAIR” status), suppress copy
processing (see
“Suppressing update copy operations during pair restoration” (page 57)
).
8.
Delete the BC pairs, which ends the pair relationship between the pair volumes (see
).
In Business Copy, it might take a lot of time before a copy operation starts. This is because before
a copy operation starts, differential tables are initialized for the relevant pairs, one pair after
another, within the system. Especially when the pairs use a large volume of data, initialization can
be a very long process.
BC pair status checks
Check the BC pair status to determine if you can perform a task. Check the status of related L1
and L2 pairs to determine if you can perform a task.

BC pair creation
When you create a pair, the XP7 storage system performs an initial copy to copy data in the P-VOL
to the S-VOL. You can create the BC pair and immediately split the pair so that you can access
the S-VOL. You can also create a cascaded pairs.
Creating a BC pair allocates the MP blade allocated to the P-VOL's LDEV to the S-VOL's LDEV.
