Behavioral Models
The panel has two behavioral models: ‘All Buttons’ mode and ‘Display and Buttons’ mode.
In ‘Panel and Buttons’ mode, the panel emulates an “alphanumeric display” using the characters
on the left-most 5×3 array of buttons. In this mode, users can turn the display on or off, as
needed. When the display is off, the 5×3 button array provides additional button functions.
In ‘All Buttons’ mode, the panel does not provide an “alphanumeric display.”
Under the ‘Display and Button’ model, the panel can have a ‘VFD/Sel Paging Toggle’ button. The
presence or absence of this button affects the operation of selection buttons. See
on page 68 for information.
Button Legends
There are many different button function types (about 35) and the legend that appears on any
button varies with the type and depends on the configurer’s intentions. Button legends have 3
lines of 8 characters. One or more lines of a button legend can be blank.
Buttons are also color-coded. The colors are specified in the NV9654 configuration. In most
cases, buttons that are high-tally (bright) are active or selected. Buttons that are low-tally
(muted) are inactive or unselected. Buttons that are dark either have no function or are momen-
tarily disabled. As an example, a ‘Take’ button is disabled until you have a destination and a
source selected. Then, the ‘Take’ button goes high tally (red, by default).
By default, category buttons show the category mnemonic and source buttons show the source
device mnemonic. By default, destination buttons show the destination device mnemonic and
salvo buttons show the salvo mnemonic.
Levels on Selection Buttons
In X-Y mode, a set of selection buttons presents a set of virtual levels that you can select and
deselect for breakaway takes. When a panel is in X-Y mode, we can call them “level” buttons for
the sake of simplicity. You can also use the level buttons to perform level-mapping. See the
function on page 63.
If you have more levels than buttons, you can use ‘Page Up’ and ‘Page Down’ buttons to view
(scroll through) all the levels. The ‘Page Up’ and ‘Page Down’ buttons are disabled when there is
nothing to scroll. There are 3 options for scrolling:
1 Scrolling the display only. The items on the selection buttons do not scroll.
2 Scrolling the selection buttons only. The items on the display do not scroll.
3 Scrolling both the display and the selection buttons at the same time. This behavior can
occur only when the panel has no ‘VFD/SEL Toggle’ button.
In this case, the panel should have exactly 8 selection buttons visible to match the 8 lines
of the display.
If the panel has a ‘VFD/SEL Toggle’ button, you can switch between options 1 and 2. The button
will read either “Paging VFD Display” [sic] or “Paging Select Buttons.”
When you page up or page down through levels on the selection buttons, the levels scroll on
the selection buttons visible on the current button page, modulo the number of buttons. For
instance, if there are 5 selection buttons on the page, they scroll in groups of 5 levels.
