Term

Definition

ALOHA

A satellite access method wherein a remote device transmits data “at will.” If
an acknowledgment is received, the transmission continues. If no
acknowledgment is received, the transmission is retried.

Circuit Number

Within the NMS Client Software, an identifying number assigned to a data
circuit..

Control Channel

The satellite channel that carries the network management and control traffic.

Ethernet

A type of LAN utilizing a physical and data link protocol that specifies a
CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection).

Event Log

A Midas NMS report that shows the activity that has occurred. The events are
listed in sequence according to the time of occurrence (oldest occurrence
first). See System Event.

Events Control Panel

Within the NMS Client Software, a window that lists all of the events
currently logged in the system.

Hunt Group

A series of channels organized so that each channel in the group is called in
sequence until a free (not busy) channel is found.

Inbound
Control Channel

The control channel that receives messages from remote sites to the NMS.

MUXed

(Multiplexed.) Passing two or more signals over one communications
channel.

Service Messages

Text messages exchanged between the NMS and the remote.

Occupancy Report

A Midas NMS report that shows the status of the system’s bandwidth
segment. Status items include the number of “owned” channels, the number
of channels in use, the number of free channels, the number of control
channels, and the percentage of available bandwidth currently allocated to
active calls.

Outbound
Control Channel

The control channel that transmits messages from the NMS to remote sites.

Phoenix BMS
(Bandwidth
Management System)

Adaptive Broadband’s system of hardware and software that controls the
configuration and operations of a satellite communications network.

Remote Station

A site in a satellite network that provides the interface to the user for
communication, but does not control the rest of the network.

Scheduled Times

Within the NMS Client Software, fields defining time periods for scheduling
a data connection.

Slotted ALOHA

A satellite access method wherein a remote device transmits data “at will”.
However the data burst fits within a slot. See ALOHA.

Space Segment

The band of frequency purchased/leased by a satellite customer. The space
segment may consist of part or all of the bandwidth of a single transponder.

System Event

A system event is any significant activity, such as an error, log in, warning,
mode change, etc., communicated from a hardware device to a computer
operating system, application, or receiver.

Traffic Channel

The satellite channel that carries communications transmissions (voice, data,
ISDN, video).
