Emphasis Visualization v1.4.0 User Manual
Emphasis for Experienced WYSIWYG/Expression Users
Emphasis Visualization is based upon the levels of WYSIWYG software. If you have used
these applications, you will find the user interface very familiar. Emphasis Visualization
replaces the DESIGN and LIVE modes of WYSIWYG Design and WYSIWYG Perform with
the new EMPHASIS mode. CAD, DATA and PRES (Presentation) modes all operate as in
the WYSIWYG applications.
Patching and EDMX
In an Emphasis Control System, the patch you create in DATA mode is the actual show
patch. This patch is created by using EDMX addresses. EDMX is ETC’s proprietary
protocol for distributing DMX information over an Ethernet network (ETCNet2). There are
32,767 available EDMX addresses in a single system, which is equivalent to 64 universes
of DMX512.
EDMX addresses are assigned to various output ports on DMX Nodes, Facepanels, and
Obsession® II Processor Units within the ETCNet2 network. EDMX is also used by Unison
CMEi units. You may assign an entire DMX universe (512 addresses) to a port, or only a
small number of addresses. This setup is achieved using the ETCNet2 Network
Configuration Editor software application on the Emphasis Server, or on another computer
within the network.
In a simple Emphasis Control System, you may have only the Facepanel generating DMX.
In this example, each DMX output port on the Facepanel may be assigned to EDMX
addresses as follows:
You can change the assignment of EDMX addresses on your Facepanel. See the
Emphasis Console User Manual for more information.
Can I just patch at the Facepanel like I used to?
You do not have to go through the entire CAD process to program a show. The CAD mode
is useful for creating your light plot and, in Emphasis 3D, a model in which you can visualize
your cues. The Tutorial in the next section walks you through the basic CAD functions and
how your light plot can become a “living document”.
If you are doing a show with conventional (not moving) lights and you just want to use the
improved Emphasis Console features the Server provides, you can do so using the Patch
display on the Facepanel. See
Patch Conventional Lights in Emphasis Console, page 34
.
If you are doing a show with moving lights and you do not want to use the CAD mode, you
must at least use the DATA mode spreadsheet to patch your fixtures. Emphasis uses the
Fixture library to patch moving lights. You can patch your conventional lights this way as
well, and use the resulting spreadsheet to create your lighting paperwork (channel
schedule, instrument schedule, etc.) See
