3.5 Vernier Scales
All Leica stereotaxic instruments have vernier scales for manual measurements. While the
instrument software makes all calculations for you, some manual measurements might be needed,
for example to center the ear bars side to side.
To use the scales follow the example below.
The main scale, graduated in millimeters, is on the ear bar, and the vernier is on the U frame. To
measure the position of the ear bar:
1. Locate the zero on the vernier scale and read below on the ear bar scale to get the first
measurement – in the example it measures 1.2 cm.
2. Use the vernier scale to measure the second decimal place. To do this locate the line of the
vernier scale that directly aligns with a millimeter line on the main scale below (only one can
align, the rest are slightly off). The third line of the vernier scale aligns with the main scale
beneath, therefore the measurement is 1.23 cm.
