Noise
Symptom
Cause/Solution
A noise is recorded.
• A rubbing or scratching noise will be recorded if an object, such
as your finger, etc., accidentally comes in contact with the linear
PCM recorder during recording with the built-in microphones.
• A noise may be recorded if many small-sized files are recorded
in the current memory. Save the files on the hard disk of your
computer, and then format the memory (page 71).
• The linear PCM recorder was placed extremely closed to an AC
source, a fluorescent lamp, a smartphone, or a mobile phone
during recording or playback. Move the linear PCM recorder
away from them.
• A noise may be recorded if the plug of the connected external
microphone was dirty when recording. Clean the plug.
For details on how to clean the external microphone, refer to
the operating instructions supplied with it.
• A noise may be recorded if the plug for the headphones or
earphones through which you are listening is dirty. Clean the
plug.

Input sounds are distorted.
• The MIC/LINE INPUT LEVEL switch or the XLR/TRS INPUT
LEVEL switch is in the wrong position. Slide it to the position
appropriate for the sound source and connections (pages 38,
39, 41).
• Adjust the recording volume to a level in an appropriate range
• If the sound source are extremely loud when recording with the
built-in microphones or an external microphone, try one of the
following.
– Adjust the recording volume by turning the REC LEVEL dial
– Slide the MIC ATT switch to “20” (page 40).
– Move the microphone away from the sound source.
• When recording audio from the connected external device,
the input audio includes extremely loud segments. Decrease
the output volume of the connected external device to a level
where no distortion would occur (page 29).
Howling noises (acoustic feedback)
occur during recording.
• If you place the headphones extremely close to the built-
in microphones while monitoring the ongoing recording,
howling noises (acoustic feedback) may occur. Turn down the
headphone volume or move the headphones away from the
built-in microphones.
