Out-of-band Communications with a network device using
some medium other than the network itself.

Packet An addressed segment of data transmitted on a

Preamble Data bits at the beginning of each block of data,
used for synchronization.

Repeater LAN signal regenerator. An Ethernet hub is a
type of repeater.

Segment Part of an Ethernet or other network on which all

SNMP The Simple Network Management Protocol; an
industry-standard protocol for remotely moni-
toring and controlling network devices from a
Network Management System (NMS). SNMP re-
quests are usually transmitted using TCP/IP,
though other means are possible.

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol;
a suite of transport and network layer communi-
cations protocols.
