Maintenance for the 5257ACL

This section includes these topics:

The only required maintenance task is to periodically run or replace the cleaning
cartridge. User Diagnostics on the Demo submenu can be used to check the operation of
the 5257ACL.

Cleaning Cartridge

To run a cleaning cartridge, issue a command to run the cartridge from the control panel,
or select the Auto Clean mode on the Configure menu, described in

Set Autoclean Mode

on page 5-7. The procedures that follow describe how to install a cleaning cartridge,
how to clean a drive using front panel controls, and how to remove the cleaning
cartridge.

Required Location for the Cleaning Cartridge

If the cleaning cartridge is run only manually, there are no restrictions on the location of
the cleaning cartridge; however, if the Auto Clean option is required, one or more slots
in the magazine must be reserved by using the Reserved Slots option described in

Set

Reserved Slots

on page 5-8. Any reserved slots in the magazine become inaccessible to

the host software. In these cases, the ACL designates these inaccessible slots as cleaning
cartridge slots. On line 4 of the screen shown in

Figure 8-3

, Cleaning Slot 1 appears

instead of Slot 10. If slots have been reserved, Cleaning Slot 1 is the first reserved slot in
the magazine.

Installing

1. Examine the Default Screen on the Control Panel to determine whether a cartridge is

loaded into the drive. If so, then unload it as described in

Unloading a Cartridge

on

page 4-4.

2. Remove the magazine from the 5257ACL using the procedure described in

Removing the Magazine

on page 6-17.

3. Remove any cartridge present in slot 1 (the slot nearest to the handle), or in

Cleaning slot 1 (the first reserved slot in the magazine). See

Required Location for

the Cleaning Cartridge

on page

8-1

.

4. Insert the cleaning cartridge into the slot emptied in Step 3.
