Licensing requirements

Capacity Advisor is installed when HP Insight Dynamics suite is installed. For specific information
about trial and LTU (License To Use) licensing on supported platforms, see the HP Insight Dynamics
6.0 Getting Started Guide
at

http://www.hp.com/go/insightdynamics/docs

. For added information

on using the HP Insight Capacity Advisor Consolidation software license, see

“Data collection

and the HP Insight Capacity Advisor Consolidation software” (page 61)

. Capacity Advisor and

Capacity Advisor Consolidation Software licenses cannot be used on the same system at the
same time.

Installation

Capacity Advisor is installed with other Insight Dynamics components, so no separate installation
is required. (See the Insight Dynamics installation guide at

http://www.hp.com/go/

insightdynamics/docs

appropriate for your operating system.) To use Capacity Advisor, you

must have a valid license.

Collection methods

On installation of HP Insight Dynamics suite, the Insight managed system setup wizard
automatically configures the mechanism used to collect data from managed servers based on
the type of operating system that the managed system is running. (See

“Supported collection

configurations” (page 17)

.)

Agentless data collection (data collected using native instrumentation) is used for Linux servers
from any CMS and for Microsoft Windows servers from a Windows CMS. For Integrity VMs
running Linux (and Windows on a Windows CMS), agentless data collection for metrics other
than CPU utilization is used in conjunction with CPU utilization data gathered via WBEM from
the HP VM host. For Microsoft Hyper-V VMs, agentless data collection is used for metrics other
than CPU utilization is used in conjunction with CPU utilization gathered from Integrity Virtual
Machines Manager. Where agentless data collection is not available, the Utilization Provider is
installed by default (on HP-UX) or as needed/requested via the Insight managed system setup
wizard (on HP-UX and Integrity Windows).

Some problems with data collection can be diagnosed with vseassist. See the Insight Dynamics
install guide for the appropriate platform for additional information.

Disk space requirements

Plan to allot the following amounts of memory for each

workload

to collect and preserve a

maximum of four years of data for use by Capacity Advisor:
