Before beginning any adjustment, make sure
that the slides and ways have been cleaned and
re-lubricated, or adjustments may be inaccurate.
The goal of adjusting gibs is to set the play
between two sliding dovetailed surfaces so
various cutting tasks can be accomplished with
accuracy and the least amount of wear on the
related components. In general, loose gibs cause
poor finishes and tool chatter; and over-tightened
gibs cause premature wear and are difficult to
operate.
