many virtual servers reside on the same computer, or if one virtual server
starts hogging resources, Web pages will be delivered more slowly.
VPI and VCI
A VPI (Virtual Path Identifier) is an 8-bit field while VCI (Virtual Channel
Identifier) is a 16-bit field in the ATM cell header. A VPI identifies a link
formed by a virtual path and a VCI identifies a channel within a virtual path.
In this way, the cells belonging to the same connection can be
distinguished. A unique and separate VPI/VCI identifier is assigned in
advance to indicate which type of cells follow; unassigned cells, physical
layer OAM cells, metasignalling channel or a generic broadcast signaling
channel. Your ISP should supply you with the values.
VPN
Short for Virtual Private Network, a network that is constructed by using
public wires to connect nodes. For example, there are a number of systems
that enable you to create networks using the Internet as the medium for
transporting data. These systems use encryption and other security
mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network
and that the data cannot be intercepted.
- W -
WAN
Short for Wide Area Network. A computer network that spans a relatively
large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more Local
Area Networks (LANs). Computers connected to a WAN are often
connected through public networks, such as the telephone system.
WEP
Short for Wired Equivalent Privacy, a security protocol for wireless local
area networks (WLANs) defined in the 802.11b standard. WEP is designed
to provide the same level of security as that of a wired LAN. LANs are
inherently more secure than WLANs because LANs are somewhat
protected by the physicalities of their structure, having some or all part of
the network inside a building that can be protected from unauthorized
access. WLANs, which are over radio waves, do not have the same
physical structure and therefore are more vulnerable to tampering. WEP
aims to provide security by encrypting data over radio waves so that it is
protected as it is transmitted from one end point to another.
WLAN
Short for Wireless Local Area Network which is a cellular computer network
that transmits and receives data with radio signals instead of wires.
Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop systems, support the
same protocols as Ethernet adapter cards.
