Starting The Engine (Cont.)

4. Place the sidestand in the UP (retracted) position.
5. If the NEUTRAL light is not illuminated, shift the transmission to neutral.
6. Apply the front brake. Leave the throttle closed and press the starter button until the

engine starts. Allow the engine to warm up at idle. (If the engine does not start after a

few seconds, release the button, wait 5-10 seconds and then press the button again.

Hold the starter button for as short a time as possible to minimize battery drain. Do not

push the starter button for more than 10 seconds at any one time.)

NOTE:

If either the Check Engine indicator or the Low Oil Pressure indicator stays on after the

engine starts, STOP THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY. See Check Engine Indicator (page 59)

or Low Oil Pressure Indicator (page 60) for more information.

CAUTION

Do not rev the engine or put the transmission in gear immediately after starting the engine.

Allow the engine to idle for one minute after a cold start (longer in cold weather). This will

allow time for oil to reach all areas before putting the engine under load.
