2. Installation
Here are the typical installation procedures.
Checklist
The following is a brief checklist of typical installation tasks for the 1174.
1. Unpack the Communications Server.
2. Place the Communications Server in an appropriate location. Refer to
“Environmental Parameters.”
3. Remove the cardboard protector (if present) from the disk drive. The unit should not be
powered on with a cardboard protector in the disk drive or the disk drive may be damaged.
4. Check and ensure memory requirements are met.
5. Connect the Communications Server to the host.
6. Install (if required) and connect ASCII, Token Ring, Ethernet, and/or Twisted Wire or
Fiber Optic interface(s).
7. Ensuring that the Power switch on the front of the Communications Server is off, plug
the Communications Server into an appropriate AC outlet.
8. Turn the Communications Server on (see Chapter 4, “Operation”).
9. Configure the Communications Server for use (see the Configuration and
Central Control manuals).
Printed Circuit Boards
Some of the optional features require the installation of additional printed circuit boards that
you can install without the assistance of a service representative.
Unpacking Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)
Follow these steps when you receive the shipment:
1. Inspect the carton for physical damage prior to unpacking.
2. If the exterior package is damaged:
• Customers in the Continental US should call 1-888-334-4380 and ask for a Customer
Service Representative. Other customers should contact their local sales office.
• Contact the carrier and arrange for examination of the package. The carrier is required
to complete and sign a damage report form.
If no damage is noted, carefully remove and unpack the package contents. Install the printed
circuit board(s) as described below.
Installing/Removing Circuit Boards
Replacement or installation of boards and features in the 1174-65S/90S require removal of
the unit cover. Qualified service personnel should perform this. Contact your local service
representative.
