Chapter 2. Installation
707020-002
The installation site must provide a properly wired and grounded power outlet. Circuits
connected to air conditioners and devices that generate significant transient electrical noise
should be avoided.
Electrostatic discharge in the vicinity of the unit should be minimized by avoiding high
resistance floor material and carpeting that does not have antistatic properties, avoiding the
use of plastic seats and covers, and avoiding low humidity levels. The unit should be located
away from areas that generate electromagnetic interference (for example, transformers, power
distribution panels, and motors). The unit should not be installed where the atmosphere contains
corrosive elements that may damage the unit.
Cable runs should avoid areas that produce electromagnetic interference (for example, near
transformers, switching equipment, power distribution panels, and under carpets where vacuum
cleaning is done). Also, heavy equipment should not be moved or rolled over the cable.

Caution: Failure to use specified cables may result in damage to the SCC board(s).
Token Ring Connection (TRC)
The Token Ring Interface cable can be attached directly to the Token Ring Media Access
Unit (MAU), or can be extended by attaching it to another cable that is attached to the MAU.
The Communications Server attachment point is at the TRC board using a 9-pin D connector.
Ethernet Connection (ETH) - 65S only (No longer offered)
The Ethernet boards have three types of connections available: AUI (10 Base 5) using a 15-pin
D connector, 50-ohm Coax (10 Base 2) using a BNC connector, or twisted pair (10 Base T)
using RJ45 phone jack connector. Only one interface may be used at a time. A slide switch is
used to select the interface for use (see Figure 2-3).
An external MAU (10 Base 2 or 10 Base 5) can be connected to the AUI connector. The MAU
must comply with IEEE 802.3 specifications. Any standard 50-ohm Ethernet coax cable can
