APPENDIX 1: COMMON COMMANDS

Description
Cmd
Enter the command line mode of a Windows system (applicable to
Windows2000 and higher).
ipconfig
Displays the IP address of the computer. (i.e. ipconfig/all) Must be run from
the command line.
Ping
Used to test for network availability and device/system recognition. Device
sends a packet to the target host and asks for a response. If the device receives
a response from the target host, it can then see the network response time
and connection status between the local device and target host. Must be run
from the command line.
netstat
Displays details of current active network connections including routing table
and network interface information. Can also be used to count the active
network connections. Must be run from the command line.
Tracert
Displays the path taken by a packet before reaching the target host and the
specific time when it reached each node. Similar to the Ping command but
provides more detailed information. Displays the entire path and IP address of
each node in the path and total elapsed tim. Must be run from the command
line.
