Insulation of piping
B. Support construction
The purpose of support structures is to transfer
the mechanical load of the insulation system and
the forces affecting the insulation system onto the
object. Support structures are essential in the
case of vertical piping. In addition to the static and
dynamic forces, changes in piping length and
support structures due to temperature must also
be taken into account when dimensioning. Support
structures are fastened to mounting supports,
which are welded to the pipe beforehand, or are
mounted directly onto the pipe via a clamping
action with so-called double clamping rings. With
temperatures above 650 °F (350 °C), the support
structures must be made of high-temperature steels.
The table below is an initial dimensioning guide,
and shows the weight of the insulation system
against the nominal width of the pipe and the
insulation thickness. The table accounts for an
insulation with an apparent density of 6 lb/ft
3
(100 kg/m³), including the spacer and a 0.20 inch
(1.0 mm) strong galvanized sheet.
