Center
The camera focuses on the subject at the center of
the frame.
The focus area is always displayed at the center of
the screen.

Notes on AF Area Mode
• When digital zoom is in effect, focus will be on the center of the screen regardless of the
AF area
mode setting.
• This function cannot be used simultaneously with certain functions. See “Camera Settings that
Cannot Be Applied Simultaneously” (
A 78) for more information.
• Autofocus may not perform as expected (

AF Area Mode Settings
This setting can be set by pressing the
d button even when using continuous shooting mode
(
A 73). A (auto) mode and continuous shooting mode share the same
AF area mode setting.

Focus Lock
Use focus lock to focus on off-center subjects when center is selected for AF area mode.
The following steps explain the usage of focus lock when
Center is selected for AF area mode.

Position the subject in the center of the frame.

Press the shutter-release button halfway.
• Confirm that the focus area glows green.
• Focus and exposure are locked.

Continue holding down the shutter-release button halfway
and recompose the picture.
• Be sure to maintain the same distance between the
camera and the subject while the shutter-release button
is pressed halfway.

Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to
take the picture.
