Entering Tape Cartridges Into a Tape Library
To enter tape cartridges into a tape library (and if needed, label the tape volumes) and
to add the tape volumes to a TMF catalog or DSM/TC environment, you must use
either the SMM GUI or a combination of commands available through ACSLS,
TMFCOM, and the MEDIACOM operator interface. See

Attempting to Use a Mismatched Tape
Only properly labeled tapes support automatic mounting of requested tape cartridges.
Each tape cartridge in a tape library must always have an external tape label (tape
barcode). Most importantly, the external tape label and the internal tape label must
match (be the same name) before any automated processing can occur. In response to
a user request, if $ZSVR mounts a mismatched tape, the OPEN fails, and the tape
cartridge is ejected from the tape library.
When Internal Tape Labels Do Not Exist or are Mismatched
If a tape volume is not prelabeled (no internal label exists or the internal label is
incorrect), it can be entered and labeled in the tape library. For tape libraries using the
SMM GUI, refer to the SMM documentation. For tape libraries using ACSLS:
1. Refer to the ACSLS documentation for the commands required to allow you to
enter a tape cartridge into a tape library.
2. On the NonStop Kernel side, specify the internal label name (must match the
external name) and the tape drive name on which the tape will be mounted:
If the tape to be used is not prelabeled, use the MEDIACOM ADD TAPELABEL
command.
To add the tape volume to the DSM/TC environment, use the MEDIACOM
command LABEL TAPEVOLUME.
To add the tape volume to a TMF catalog, use the TMFCOM command ADD
TAPEMEDIA with the LABEL ON option. (This specifies the TMF label, which
you do instead of specifying an internal label name).
After the label is written, the tape cartridge is automatically removed from the tape
drive and placed in an appropriate cell in the tape library.
When Internal Tape Labels Already Exist
To enter a tape cartridge that already has matching internal and external labels into a
tape library using SMM, refer to the SMM documentation. For tape libraries using
ACSLS:

enter a tape cartridge in a tape library.
