Computer software that

controls the basic operations of a network.

nanosecond

offline

The state in which the printer cannot accept or

print out data.

online

The state in which the printer can accept and

print out data.

operating system

The computer program or group of

programs that controls the basic operation of the
computer and its peripheral devices.

parallel interface

An interface that uses multiple data

circuits. It is usually faster than serial ports and may
also support bidirectional communication between
devices.

PCL

Printer Command Language. An escape code

printer language developed by Hewlett-Packard.

PCL 5e

A version of Hewlett-Packard’s Printer

Command Language—an escape code printer language.
PCL 5e is one of the printer languages emulated by the
Silentwriter 1760/1765. The other is PostScript Level 2,
which is a page description language.

PDL

Page Description Language. A printer language,

such as Adobe’s PostScript, that describes pages of text
and graphics.

peripheral device

Any device (such as a printer) that

you attach to and operate with your computer.

ping

A program used with TCP/IP networks to test

the reachability of destinations by sending them a
request and waiting for a reply.

point

A unit of measurement for sizing type. One

point equals 1/72 inch.

port

A socket on the connector panel of a computer or

peripheral device where you can plug in a cable to
connect to another computer or device, or to a network.

PostScript Level 2

A page description language

developed by Adobe that controls the placement of text
and graphics on a page. PostScript Level 2 is one of the
printer languages emulated by the Silentwriter 1760/
1765. The other is PCL 5e, which is a printer command
language.

PostScript Printer Description file

A file which

describes device-specific characteristics for a PostScript
device.

Print Monitor

The user interface for monitoring the

status of a print job from the computer display.

printer driver

A software file that translates printer

commands.

printer language

The generic term for a language that

the printer uses to interpret instructions for placing text
and graphics on a page. For example, the Silentwriter
1760/1765 can interpret information by emulating the
PCL 5e printer command language, the PostScript page
description language, or the HP-GL/2 graphics
language.

printer software

Software you install on your

computer to allow you to control the printer from your
computer.

protocol

A formal description of message formats and

the rules two or more machines must follow to
exchange those messages.
