file transfer protocol The TCP/IP standard, high-level
protocol for transferring files from one machine to
another.
firmware Programs stored permanently in read-only
memory (ROM). Such programs are built into the
printer at the factory. They can be executed at any time,
but only flash-ROM can be modified or erased from
memory.
flash-ROM ROM which can be rewritten.
frame A packet of information transmitted across an
Ethernet network.
ftp See file transfer protocol.
hex dump A printer mode in which all data is output
in hexadecimal format.
hot-key A combination of keys on your computer
keyboard that you press at the same time to execute a
command or launch an application.
HP-GL/2 A printer programming language for
graphics developed by Hewlett-Packard.
icon A small graphic image that is a placeholder for a
program, file, or command. Often you select the icon to
access the item it represents.
IEEE 802.2, IEEE 802.3 The Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers 802 standards committee
standardizes network technologies. IEEE 802.3 is the 802
standard that most closely resembles Ethernet.
indicator lights LED lights on the printer operator
panel that communicate the current printer status.
IPXODI NetWare network operating systems uses the
IPXODI.COM program to deliver data packets across a
NetWare network.
KB An abbreviation for kilobyte, i.e., roughly one
thousand bytes.
LAN See Local Area Network
LAN card The part of the printer that communicates
with the network.
LCD Liquid Crystal Display.
LED Light Emitting Diode
local area network Any physical network technology
designed to span short distances, up to a few thousand
meters.
LocalTalk A physical cabling system used to link
computers and peripheral devices in a Macintosh
network system.
LocalTalk connector A piece of equipment consisting
of a small box with a built-in cable that links a device to
a LocalTalk cable system.
MAC Address A unique network identifier.
Macintosh A line of computers, computer products,
and peripheral devices produced by Apple Computer,
Inc.
Media Access Control Address See MAC Address
MB An abbreviation for megabyte, i.e., one million
bytes.
MS-DOS See DOS.
NetWare Loadable Module A program which can be
loaded and unloaded from NetWare server memory
while the server is running.
NLM See NetWare Loadable Module
network A system (and any software that supports it)
linking computers and peripheral devices.
