Chapter 2 – Software and Driver Install
Introduction
Prior to device configuration, both the STAPL player (acx_stapl_player), and (if USB
connectivity is desired) the USB drivers for the Bitporter pod must be installed on the host
system.
There are two ways to install the STAPL player and optional Bitporter USB drivers:

As a standalone command‐line bitstream loading tool. (Useful in a lab environment,
this contains no graphical component.)
•
As part of the ACE software suite. (Intended for general use, ACE includes a graphi‐
cal Download tool, the SnapShot debugging tool, and the HW Demo tool. The com‐
mand‐line acx_stapl_player is also installed with ACE.)
Note:
No license file or license server is needed when running the STAPL player from the command
line. Running ACE does require a license.
Standalone STAPL Player and USB Driver Install
For users wishing to install only the STAPL Player and not the rest of ACE, (for example:
when using a separate low‐end host PC in a lab environment,) the player and USB drivers can
be installed separately from ACE.
Be aware that the standalone STAPL Player is only useful for device programming, and little
else.
Be aware that the use of the SnapShot debugging tool requires the installation of the full ACE
software suite.
Note:
Users wishing to install the entire ACE software suite (which already includes the STAPL player
and USB drivers) should refer to the Achronix Software & License User Guide (UG002).
Important!
Disconnect any attached Bitporter pods from the host PC before installing the ACE
Software suite and USB drivers.

Windows
After locating the standalone STAPL player installer (standalone_acx_stapl_player_
installer.exe
) on the development kit CD (or downloading it from the Achronix web
site), install the software to the desired installation directory.
Important!
Do not install both ACE and the standalone STAPL player on the same Windows
machine. Be sure to uninstall any previous installations of Achronix software and reboot before
running the standalone STAPL player installer.

Locate the standalone STAPL player installer (standalone_acx_stapl_player_
installer.exe
) on the development kit CD or web site. Double‐click the install file
to begin the process.
