6 Working with Recovery Sets

Getting started

What is Recovery Set?

Recovery Set is a snapshot collection of one or more Virtual Volumes that reside on the HP 3PAR
StoreServ used to form a VMware datastore or Virtual Machine. These snapshots are also referred
as Virtual Copies in HP 3PAR StoreServ. Recovery Set is decorated with application specific
metadata and is registered as a custom object in Web Client that allows relationship building
between the different VMware objects.

Recovery Manager for VMware supports Recovery Set creation at both VM and datastore levels.
Prior to creating Recovery Sets, ensure that the following conditions are met:

Creating a Recovery Set at the VM level requires sufficient free space on the datastore where
the VMDK file resides.

In order to create a Recovery Set on an HP 3PAR Virtual Volume, the Volume must have
Recovery Set space allocated in the storage array during its creation.

Datastore creation from NFS drives is not supported for Recovery Set operations.

Recovery Manager for VMware supports only one Virtual Volume per datastore.

VMware Tool is required in a Virtual Machine to guarantee a consistent and usable backup
when application consistency is required.

All existing VMFS snapshots pertaining to the Virtual Machine or datastore must be removed
before creating Recovery Set.

If Peer Persistent is enabled, use the Remote Recovery Configuration page to create new
Recovery Set.

Once created, Recovery Set allows you to mount individual Recovery Set to a specific ESXi host.
You can further attach the mounted Volume to a selected Virtual Machine as additional disk for
file level restore.

This is equivalent to the “Virtual Copy Set” in the vSphere Client display.

Recovery Sets tab

The Recovery Sets tab is available under Related Objects for Virtual Machines and datastores.
When you select a Recovery Sets, all the Recovery Set objects associated to the selected Virtual
Machine or datastore is displayed.

Actions menu

Actions menu support the following actions:

Assign vCenter—This feature is not available in this release.

Delete—Removes the selected Recovery Set object.

Promote—Restores the content of the base Volume with the selected Recovery Set. This option
is only available to the datastore level Recovery Set. When you run this operation, access to
the base Volume is temporary removed until the promote operation completes. The entire
Virtual Volume is promoted to the selected point-in-time image.

Update Recovery Manager Cache—Refreshes the current server cache to reflect the changes
in vCenter or storage array inventory objects. When you select a Recovery Set object from
the list, the details pertaining to the object is displayed.
