Set Up and Modification of COM Ports
Each plug-in port on the Trimble Ranger is assigned a communication (COM) port number. The COM port settings establish
communication between the IHD and the programming software.
The first time you access the IHD and prior to programming, check and modify the COM port settings, if necessary, by
following these steps.
NOTE: Make sure the Trimble Ranger is on and the IHD programming software is installed before you start.
1. Connect the IHD unit to the Trimble Ranger USB plug-in port using the custom programming cable.
2. Tap the Menu soft key, then tap Settings.
Refer to "Overview of Menu and Navigation" on
page 15 if you need help with navigating the IHD
menu.
Result: The COM port settings screen opens.

3. Set the COM port for the IHD by selecting from the
Device COM Port field drop-down menu.
The COM port for the IHD is preceded by $device\.
If the field already displays the COM port number
with $device\ preceding it, you do not need to
change it.
In Figure 21, the port is COM10.
