Select the File > Properties > Settings > ASCII Setup menu item.
Check the Echo typed characters locally option, as shown below.

To confirm a proper RS485 connection to the EPM4500, enter the following command:
attn -D
(followed by the [ENTER] key)
If meter is properly connected, it will respond with a serial number and poll address. Once
in Modbus mode, this command will no longer work.
For example, entering the command
attn -D
followed by the [ENTER] key returns:
60005866 256
for a meter with serial number 60005866 and poll address 256.

Logging into the Meter
Use the following procedure to login to the EPM4500.

Setup a ‘key macro’ in HyperTerminal by selecting the View > Key
Macros menu item.
Z
Click New and select an appropriate macro key sequence (ALT-1 is
used the example below.
Z
Enter the following command in the Action area:
attn -S[serialNumber] -5lEvElbAl
Z
The password is -s5 followed by the LABLEVEL text spelled
backwards, with the vowels in upper case.
This login string must be followed by the ENTER command within
the key macro.
For example, for a unit with serial number 60005866, enter the following text:
