CANON

History of Canon Inc. as one of the world’s top camera manufacturers dates back to early thirties when the most popular camera brands were German Leica and Contax, considered as the world’s super grade cameras. Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida and Takeo Maeda organized Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in a room of an apartment located in Azabu Ward, Tokyo and in 1934 they made the Kwanon, a prototype of Japan’s first 35-mm camera. In 1947 the company’s name became Canon Camera Co.,Inc., and in 1969 it was shortened to Canon Inc. “Canon”,a trademark of the company known all over the world as one of the leaders in imaging and optical technologies for its cameras, photocopiers, camcorders, printers, scanners, steppers, medical equipment.

According to Webster’s one of the meaning s of the word “canon”, is “a criterion or standard of judgement”, which is the most suitable word for the company looking toward a standard precision.

In February 1936 “Hansa Canon” the first commercial camera produced by Canon was released. Since at the time there was no equipment needed to make their own lenses, Canon managed to cooperate with Nippon Kogaku Kogyo (the predecessor of Nikon Corporation) and use their Nikkor lens for “Hansa Canon”.

In the first thirty years of its business Canon became active in the calculator, camcorder and television broadcasting markets with their own “zoom lens” mechanism. The first Japan 10-key calculator was introduced in 1964. In 1976 Canon launched the world’s first camera with an embedded micro-computer. It was AE-1. In 1985 the world’s first Canon Inkjet printers based on Bubble Jet technology shook up the printing community.

They went on to develop innovative solutions and manufacture new cameras, photo copiers, printers and digital devices not only for home and office use but also to be applied in optics, broadcast and medicine. Canon structure includes three major business sections: the Office Business Unit; the Consumer Business Unit; and the Industry and Others Business Unit. Each of them bear responsibity for certain groups of Canon products.

Today Canon operates all over the world with its headquarters in America, Europe, Middle East, Japan, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Being a company with corporate social responsibility, Canon attaches great importance to the fields of humanitarian aid, education, ethics, social welfare. Canon tops the list of 56 climate-friendly companies according to the report of environmental organization Clean Air-Cool Planet. The Canon Group Charter aims at "offering products with a lower environmental burden through improvements in resource efficiency, while eliminating anti-social activities that threaten the health and safety of mankind and the environment."

Canon participates in charitable activities and in 2008 the company rendered financial support to China people who suffered from the earthquake in China’s Sichuan province. Besides Canon takes active part in the world events and acted as a sponsor for Formula One, UEFA Europe Football, the Red Cross. Starting from 2006 the company has been supporting thirteen Red Cross National Societies in Europe, especially youth programs. Canon support implies providing not only financial assistance, but as well furnishing diverse imaging devices such as cameras, copiers, radiography equipment.
