Hardware

Any physical component of a computer system, such as a monitor,
printer, keyboard, or CPU.

High-density

A type of diskette format that allows you to store up to 1.2MB or

1.44MB of data.

Input/output port

See Port.

Interface

A physical or software connection used to transmit data between equip-

ment or programs.

Kilobyte (KB)

A unit used to measure storage space (in a computer’s memory or on a
disk). One kilobyte equals 1024 bytes.

LED

Light Emitting Diode. A substance that illuminates when electricity

passes through it, like the indicator lights on the front panel of the

Equity II+.

Main unit

The Equity II+ computer.

Megabyte (MB)

A unit used to measure storage space (in a computer’s memory or on a
disk). One megabyte equals 1,048,576 bytes.

Memory

The area where your computer stores data. Memory contents can be

permanent and inalterable (ROM) or temporary (RAM).

Microprocessor

A small version of a CPU contained on one semiconductor chip.

Modem

A device that allows a computer to transmit signals over telephone lines
so it can send and receive data. Modem stands for MOdulator/DEMod-
ulator.

Monitor

The piece of hardware that contains the screen and displays informa-

tion.
