Decode
Determining the information which has been encoded in a bar-code symbol.
Decoder
The portion of a bar-code reading system that performs the decode function.
Defects
This parameter grade can be “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F.”
Defects are of two types, voids and spots. Voids are light areas in bars, and spots are
dark areas in spaces.
The defect grade is determined by a relationship between the largest defect in the symbol
and symbol contrast. The smaller the defect, the better the grade. Aperture size can
affect grade; for example, using a small aperture to analyze a very wide element will
permit detection of the largest defects.
Defects are usually voids, and these defects can be reduced by increasing the amount of
ink (or equivalent).
Diffuse Reflection
Reflected light which emanates uniformly in all directions from the reflecting surface.
Dimensional Deviation (DD)
The measured deviation of bars and/or spaces of a scanned symbol from the specification.
Discrete Code
A bar-code or symbol wherein the spaces between the characters are not part of the data.
