Programming for Off-season
Sports are often seasonal, but that doesn’t mean your
YouTube sports channel should be! It’s important to keep
your channel active - even during the off-season - in order
to maintain viewership and audience interest all year
round.
During the season, when viewership is at its peak, make
sure your audience is aware that you’ll also be offering
compelling content throughout the off-season. Now, let’s
dive into some strategies to help you maintain viewership
and engagement during the off-season.
Off-Season Tent-pole Programming
While the majority of tent-pole events likely occur during
the season, there are also off-season events that you
should consider incorporating into your programming
strategy:
•
Trainings
•
Drafts
•
Transfers
•
Trades
•
Interviews
Of course, creating new content around off-season
tent-pole events is not always an option. This is why
it’s imperative that you either plan ahead and
produce content during the season specifically
designed for the off-season, or, that you use archived
content in new, creative ways. After all, you don’t
want to find yourself stuck in the ‘Oh jeez, I don’t have
any content!’ predicament.
Archived Content
Think strategically about how you can leverage your
library of repurposed content, especially (but not
exclusively!) during the off-season, when you’re likely
producing less content and events are less frequent.
Here are a few ideas:
•
Create playlists that repurpose seasonal footage
such as Best Goals or player-specific highlights.
•
If news related to a player emerges during
off-season, pull together highlights from your
library featuring that particular player.
•
If you have library content related to a tent-pole
event, be sure to upload that content during the
event to generate the most traffic.
