Channel Programming

Sports events can be characterized as either planned or

unplanned events. Planned events include things like

games or drafts that are on the calendar for months in

advance, while unplanned events revolve around quickly

breaking news. Let’s dive into the strategies for each one as

it relates to sports programming.

For Planned Events

Create a detailed schedule that lists the relevant

sporting events for the upcoming year. Include events

such as your sport’s playoffs and finals, training camps

or rivalry games. Use this schedule as a starting point

to create a production strategy for your channel.

Program around the schedule. You might choose to

produce content for every major planned event, but

be more selective when it comes to smaller ones.

There’s a careful balance between creating a steady

stream of content to keep your audience engaged,

and overwhelming your audience by uploading too

frequently. Experiment to find out what works best for

your audience.

For large events that generate traffic months in

advance, such as the Olympics or the World Cup,

consider creating teaser videos to generate interest

early on.
