Wired LANs
As the name implies, a wired
LAN connects computers (and
other network devices)
physically, using wires. A typical
LAN uses twisted-pair wiring
(similar to telephone wiring) to
connect each computer to a
central hub. The hub transmits
network communications
between computers.
Wired LANs offer high-speed
communication, as well as
reasonable security and
reliability. In general, however,
they are not as flexible as
wireless LANs.
Most wired LANs conform to the
IEEE 802.3 standard. The most
common wiring schemes use
twisted-pair wiring or thin
coaxial wiring.
