Chapter One – Introduction
1.1 Product Description
The 5242-2SE was designed and built specifically for use in a telecommunications central office
environment. Typical applications include file backup, archive, and software loading. The 5242-2SE
contains two independent DAT drives.
The 5242-2SE unit mounts in a 19-inch rack. Each module consists of two 4mm DAT72 drives. It
has built-in power-on-self-test (POST) diagnostic.
The 5242-2SE uses DAT72 tape drives and is designed to use a 170-meter DAT72 tape cartridge.
The drive is also backward compatible with the DDS-3 tape format. It is not backward compatible
with DDS-2 or DDS-1 tape formats. The unit is considered a field replaceable unit (FRU) and can
only be installed or replaced by qualified personnel trained by HP.
Each DAT72 drive module has a front panel LCD that displays performance and statistical
information. In addition, the LCD allows some configuration and diagnostic utilities to be run to
verify correct drive setup. Internal drive firmware can be upgraded without opening the drive case
via a code-load tape.
The DAT72 drive can store 36GB of data per DAT72 cartridge and up to 72GB of data in
compressed mode (assuming a 2:1 compression factor). The drive has both read and write heads and
can perform read-after-write (RAW) data checking on the fly.
