Site Preparation and Planning

Before you install the IBM System Storage DR550 we recommend that you consider several things
to avoid problems during the installation and configuration. The DR550 comes as an almost ready to
use system with a complete assembled hardware in a rack (or two) and preconfigured software.
Nevertheless we review some topics of importance when planning for the physical installation and
configuration of the IBM System Storage DR550 within your environment.

Planning to be done is centered on integrating the rack(s) into the operational IT environment. The
racks themselves are already assembled. To integrate the rack(s) into your environment you have to
plan or validate the following:

The size of the floor area required by the DR550 rack(s)

– Floor load capacity
– Space needed for expansion
– Service clearance
– Check for potential clearance problems along the access route

The power requirements

– Multiple 208 volt or 220 volt 30 amp (single phase) power service feeds

2 feeds for 5.6, 11.2 and 22.4 TB configurations (both dual engine and single

engine configurations)

4 feeds for 89.6 TB configurations

– Each feed of a pair are recommended to be on a different AC power feed for

increased availability

– Power cords are shipped with each rack

Climate control is required (Environmental Class A)

Cables and Connectors

– RJ-45 to 9-pin converter cable to administer from the front serial port of pSeries

(included) – this is an option that only offers limited functions

The network environment

– IP addresses
– Check for address conflicts before cabling to your network

The table below shows selected factory IP address settings and provides a column to enter the IP
addresses to be used later when configuring the DR550. Other IP addresses within DR550 do not
need to be changed.
