SAFETy INSTRuCTIONS AND WARNINGS
14. Vapors of chlornated solvents can form the toxc gas
“Phosgene” when exposed to ultravolet radaton from
an electrc arc. All solvents, degreasers and potental
sources of these vapors must be removed from the work
area.
15. Fumes produced by weldng or cuttng, partcularly n
confined places, can cause dscomfort and physcal harm
f nhaled over an extended perod of tme.
16. Provde adequate ventlaton n the weldng or cuttng
area. use ar-suppled resprators f ventlaton s not
adequate to remove all fumes and gases. Never ventlate
wth oxygen. Oxygen supports and vgorously accelerates
fire.
WARNING
arc rays, hot slag, and sparKs can injure
eyes and burn sKin .
17. The weldng and cuttng processes produce extreme
localzed heat and strong ultravolet rays.
18. Never attempt to weld or cut wthout a weldng helmet
wth the proper lens. Ensure that the lens comples wth
federal gudelnes. A number 12 to 14 shade filter lens
provdes the best protecton aganst arc radaton. When
n a confined area, prevent the reflected arc rays from
enterng around the helmet.
19. Ensure all personnel n the work area are protected from
arc rays and sparks. Approved sheldng curtans and
approprate goggles should be used to provde protecton
to staff n the surroundng area and operators of nearby
equpment.
20. unprotected skn should also be covered from arc rays,
heat and molten metal. Always wear protectve gloves
and clothng that does not allow skn to become exposed.
All pockets should be closed and cuffs sewn shut. Leather
aprons, sleeves, leggngs, etc., should be worn for out-of-
poston weldng and cuttng or for heavy operatons usng
large electrodes. Hgh top work shoes provde adequate
protecton from foot burns. For added protecton use
leather spats.
21. Flammable har preparatons should not be used when
weldng or cuttng. Wear ear plugs to protect ears from
sparks.
22. Where the work area permts, the operator should be
enclosed n an ndvdual booth panted wth a finsh of
low reflectvty such as znc oxde. Ths s an mportant
factor for absorbng ultravolet radatons, and lamp black.
The operator should be enclosed wth non-combustble
screens smlarly panted.
WARNING
Welding sparKs can cause fires and
eXplosions.
23. Causes of fire and exploson are: combustbles reached by
the arc, flame, flyng sparks, hot slag or heated materal.
Remove combustbles from the work area and/or provde
a fire watch.
24. Avod oly or greasy clothng as sparks may gnte them.
Have a fire extngusher nearby, and know how to use
t.
25. Be alert to the danger of conducton or radaton. For
example, f weldng or cuttng s to be done on a metal
wall, partton, celng, or roof, precautons must be taken
to prevent gnton of combustbles on the other sde.
26. Do not weld or cut contaners that have held combustbles.
All hollow spaces, cavtes, and contaners should be
vented pror to weldng or cuttng to permt the escape
of ar or gases. Purgng wth nert gas s recommended.
27. Never use oxygen n a weldng torch. use only nert gases
or nert gas mxes as requred by the process. use of
combustble compressed gases can cause explosons
resultng n personal njury or death. Arcng aganst any
compressed gas cylnder can cause cylnder damage or
exploson.
WARNING
noise can damage hearing.
28. Nose from the ar carbon-arc process can damage
your hearng. Wear protectve hearng devces to ensure
protecton when nose levels exceed OSHA standards.
Adequate hearng protecton devces must be worn by
operators and surroundng personnel to ensure personal
protecton aganst nose.
