XP Disk Array and Volumes (LUs)

The Direct Backup Engine operations involve the XP Disk Array. Direct
Backup Engine supports all physical disk drive options and RAID-level
configurations for the XP Disk Array. The XP Disk Array contains the
original volumes (LUs) for backup, and remains online to the host server
all the time. Also, the XP Disk Array must contain at least one port group,
which consists of a target port for receiving the Extended Copy commands
from the host server and an initiator port for copying the specified data to
the backup device. Also, the LUN Manager option on the Remote Console
PC is required to set the port groups.

Direct Backup Engine supports all LUs that can be identified by the
backup application on the host server. When the Extended Copy command
is issued to the XP Disk Array from the backup application on the host
server, information about the data (files) that you want to copy is reported
to the XP Disk Array by the Extended Copy command. For example, the
Extended Copy command instructs the XP Disk Array about the LUN in
which the data is stored, the starting Logical Block Address (LBA), and
the data size to be transferred.

Note:

How you specify files that you want

to copy depends on the backup application on the host server.

Figure 3 shows an example of how the Extended Copy command specifies
the data to be copied.
