standard drivers

Major server manufacturers usually qualify their systems with specific versions of
drivers, which are then included on any installation CDs they provide with their
systems. For example, the HP NetServer Navigator CD included with each HP
NetServer contains HBA and Network Card drivers for the various operating
systems supported. These are then included in any OS installation performed by
the automatic OS Installation Assistant provided on the NetServer Navigator CD.

deciding to change drivers

Before altering drivers, you should be aware that doing so can effectively
introduce untested drivers into your systems. However, drivers - especially HBA
drivers - are constantly being refined. Using a later version of a driver should not
introduce any new reliability problems, and can often improve any existing
reliability problems you may have on your systems. The general advice however,
is that drivers should only be altered if problems are actually being experienced.

possible impact on other parts of the system

If you are experiencing SCSI errors when using your backup software, you need
to consider the possible impact on the other parts of the system before you decide
to change the HBA drivers.

For example, upgrading the driver for the SCSI controller connected to the tape
drive will not alter the driver controlling the disk subsystem in the following cases:

1. Where the system hard disks are controlled by a Symbios SCSI controller

and driver, and where the tape drive is connected to an Adaptec 2940UW.

2. Where the system hard disks are controlled by a HP NetRAID controller

and driver, and where the tape drive is connected to a Symbios controller.

Upgrading the driver for the SCSI controller connected to the tape drive will also
alter the driver controlling the disk subsystem, in the following cases:

1. Where the system hard disks are controlled by a Symbios SCSI controller

and driver, and where the tape drive is connected to a Symbios SCSI
controller.

2. Where the system hard disks are controlled by an Adaptec 7880 controller

and driver, and where the tape drive is connected to an Adaptec 2940UW.
